'Where left and right brains meet'

Cumming & Co thrives on working with free thinkers; ambitious individuals who believe like us, that anything is possible.  Be they entrepreneurs, artists, CEOs, musicians, financiers or curators, we seek out visionaries who trust us with challenging yet fulfilling briefs.  Through research, interrogation, listening and observation we identify what sets them apart and makes their ideas innovative and ingenious.  Then we work to empower and highlight these differences, transforming them into a competitive advantage.

Mark Cumming by Cumming & Co collaborators….

…Dylan Griffith, creative director – MTV Europe, Smorgasbord Design
“When I first had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Cumming I wrongly assumed that he was a military man.  Whilst assumption is generally known as ‘the mother of all fuck-ups’ I can happily say that this has definitely not been the case with our friendship, which is in fine fettle.  He had something about him that I couldn’t quite put my finger on – an urbane yet affable chap – somewhat of a ‘rough diamond’ with a whiff of money and a touch of ‘pedigree’ maybe?  I imagined him as someone who was equally comfortable in a beaten up pair of R.M. Williams boots and an Akubra as he would be sporting Grensons and a Harris Tweed three-piece suit.

We’re talking about a chap who’s a contemporary Renaissance man – a man that you’d want by your side going into war. He’s probably crushed grapes at Chateau Le Pin, can disassemble and reassemble an Uzi in two minutes flat, can wax lyrical about such diverse subjects as the benefits of sabre planting over regular planting and a tilt-rotor over a standard helicopter – and no doubt can whip up a mean risotto with ‘what’s left in the fridge’.

Whilst Mr. Cumming is the cornerstone and driver of Cumming & Co. he is a big fan of collaboration.  You see this highly likeable chap is a people’s person – someone that Malcolm Gladwell would term a ‘connector’.  One flick through his dog-eared (big) little black book tells the story.  I once casually asked him if he knew any polar bear hunters (more out of self amusement than as a serious question you understand), and without a hint of sarcasm Mr. Cumming swiftly replied yes, and offered me the names and numbers of two such fellows living in a remote community in Eastern Greenland.  Need I go on?”

…Abigail Comber, Head of Brands and Marketing, British Airways
"Mark has the ability to connect people and make the impossible happen.  His connections are far and wide.  I don't know how he makes them and I don't know what he does to make it all happen.  I do know that it works".

…Gaby Darbyshire, Framestore Ventures
"The nicest smelling man in advertising'. No kidding; a man he hadn't seen in 10 years and this is what he said first. Let's just say, Mark leaves a good impression."

…Nadav Kander, photographer
"A man who makes decisions and good ones at that.  Assured, a good frontman".

…Ross Mollison, Impresario, Spiegelworld
"Whether the project is a boffo-bonanza or a flea-ridden dog, you are sure to have the most fun you have ever had".

…Mike West, Managing Director & Head of Communications Asia Pacific, Deutsche Bank AG
"Astoundingly creative for a guy who can also count and manage complex project.  Impressive".

…Adam Keswick, Deputy Chairman, Jardine Matheson Ltd
"To be honest with you I’ve only ever done one project with Mark and I probably won’t do another, because it will never ever be as good".

…Syience, GRAMMY award winning producer and songwriter
"To say the least Mark has a great fill for people, he knows when to tighten up or to break it down (literally)!!  Some people just have a gift to make everyone in a room feel comfortable and at ease, Mark is definitely one of those people.  And he probably doesn't even know he has such, such a huge effect on people, but that's what makes him authentic".

…Einar Ben, Co-Founder and Partner, Tjarnargatan
"Mark is the guy who picks up the phone, and voila.., you have a date with the Pope.  He knows the right people, at the right places".

…Pope Francis, Bishop Of Rome, The Catholic Church
"Who…?"

…Matt Pyke, Founder & Creative Director, Universal Everything
"Mark is the man we call when we need the impossible to happen".

…Oliver Walsh, Chief Marketing Officer, Aritzia
"What do you want to talk?  Broad stuff: technology, business strategy?  Specific stuff: spiegeltents, photography?  Or do you just want to do.., tick things off your list?  For either you’d be hard pushed to find a better partner than Mark".

…Arnar Helgi Hlynsson, Creative Director, Tjarnargatan
"I have never met anyone who has as much deep understanding on creative work".

…Peter Schreyer, President & Chief Design Officer, Hyundai Motor Group
"No matter which crazy idea, Mark would step in. One thing he doesn't know, is the word no".

…Frank X. Lonergan, President, Spur (Projects + Happenings)
"Our first meeting was an unforgettable journey that eliminated the boundaries between art and business.  Then…. we decided to work together, and that was pretty darn good too".

…and in his own words…Mark Cumming, Founder, Cumming & Co
I’m a proud Scot, who now finds himself a resident of China, Hong Kong to be precise.  My longwinded journey here started in 1990 when I started my production company Shoot Logistics.  That amazing business, producing advertising for almost every one of the world’s top brands, took me to 70 countries and more than 30 of the US states, and left me not only with a legacy of an interstellar quantity of air miles, but an unrivalled address book of talented friends, colleagues and collaborators.

Ten years ago, creative curiosity led me broaden my horizons further, and I quickly found myself expanding my producing activities into the areas of live music, events, circus, theatre and art.  That’s where I got the taste for winning awards, and entertaining the public…

So after selling Shoot Logistics in 2010 and moving my base of operations to Hong Kong I diversified further.  Initially named eightfive2 ltd, my new venture Cumming & Co has now diversified into a number of new fields that all share the same need for creativity, strategy and planning.

You’ll find examples of our recent work on this website, however there’s also a number of projects that involve commercially sensitive material that cannot be displayed - these activities centre around consulting on creativity and brand strategy for a number of major marques.

Most recently I have become very actively involved in a number of residential and commercial property developments in the city, and I’m currently tackling the design and construction of a harbour-front hotel.  And to be honest I had no idea that bricks and mortar could be so exciting, but I see a hotel as being a stage for combustible human energy, no different really to producing theatrical entertainment!  So watch this space…
